Energy White Paper

SSE customer base grows

Scottish and Southern Energy's (SSE's) customer base passed the nine million mark for the first time during the second quarter of this year, according to new figures.

The commercial electricity supplier is set to reveal the statistic along with other facts at its annual general meeting in Bournemouth today.

It was also found that the amount of complaints sent to energywatch about the firm also fell, while its major investments "continue to make progress".

SSE chief executive Ian Marchant added that the company was "on course" to meet its priority target of achieving at least four per cent real growth, but added that the full impact of rising wholesale energy prices was "still to be felt".

"We are continuing to resist the pressure to put up prices for domestic customers, but doing so is becoming more difficult by the day," he added.

SSE recently revealed it has been given consent to build Europe's largest onshore windfarm in southern Scotland.

The new development, which will be based between Biggar and Moffat, is expected to be completed by 2011.
