ScottishPower completes sub-station work

A leading commercial electricity supplier has completed work which will increase the amount of renewable energy available to homes and businesses.

ScottishPower's two new primary sub-stations in South Lanarkshire are part of a programme to increase electricity export capacity.

It is thought that the improvement of interconnector links between Scotland and England will help to enhance the security of energy supplies across the UK.

ScottishPower's energy network director Alan Bryce said the completion of the work was "a significant milestone".

He said: "The new sub stations will facilitate the transmission of a significant amount of renewable energy being produced in Scotland throughout the rest of the UK.

"The development of renewable energy projects in Scotland is increasing all the time so it is vital that there is suitable infrastructure to support this growth."

Earlier this month, ScottishPower announced it has secured a five-year coal supply deal worth £700 million with Scottish Coal.

It is believed the agreement will create over 100 new jobs in the industry.
