Energy White Paper

Energy supplier to build biomass plant

A leading commercial electricity supplier has announced plans to build a new biomass power station in Scotland.

npower's combined heat and power (CHP) division, Cogen, is behind proposals to create the facility, which will provide energy to a local paper mill in a long-term contract, at Markinch.

The Scottish government has also supported the plans by providing a £8.1 million regional selective assistance grant to the project.

Alex Salmond, the country's First Minister, said: "This is tremendously exciting with huge economic and environmental benefits for Scotland.

"I am delighted that we have attracted and secured this significant investment. The project complements the Scottish government's work to make Scotland a greener, wealthier and fairer place to live and do business in."

npower was recently awarded the CommunityMark from Business in the Community.

The company was the only utility company to be given the accolade, which is given to firms that have invested in local communities and had a positive impact on society.
