E.ON given green light for biomass station

A leading commercial electricity supplier has been given the go-ahead to develop a biomass power station in Sheffield.

E.ON received approval from the city's council to build the plant, which will produce power for around 4,000 homes and be fully operational by 2011, at Blackburn Meadows.

Construction work on the facility, which will be the company's second biomass development in the UK, is expected to begin at the start of next year.

Dave Rogers, E.ON's regional director for climate and renewables, said the supplier was "delighted" to receive approval.

"Biomass power stations offer us an exciting opportunity to help combat climate change by using 'carbon neutral' products in the place of traditional fossil fuels to generate electricity - further proof of our commitment to changing energy in the UK," he added.

Last month, E.ON withdrew from a project to develop a windfarm near Ferndale in Wales.

The company decided to pull out of the development after discovered that it could cause noise pollution for those living nearby.
