Energy White Paper

Ofgem to consider regional price differences

The energy regulator is to consider differences in the cost of gas and electricity across the UK, it has been announced.

Ofgem is expected to make the investigation part of its review into energy markets after a study by energywatch's Welsh arm found that domestic and commercial electricity users in the country are paying more than customers in England, Scotland and Ireland.

According to the BBC, the Welsh Assembly's sustainability minister Jane Davidson has received a letter from Ofgem's chairman guaranteeing that the issue will be considered in the new report.

Speaking to the news provider, Ms Davidson said: "It is important that Ofgem looks at regional price differences to ensure that Welsh consumers are charged the same as other parts of the UK.

"The evidence produced by energywatch indicates that consumers in Wales are paying more for their electricity than elsewhere."

Ofgem recently published a review in which it proposes changes to regulations that would allow smaller energy suppliers to join the UK market.
