Regulator investigates energy supplier The UK's energy regulator has announced that it is to investigate the billing process of a leading commercial electricity supplier.Ofgem is launching the inquiry into practices by npower after it was brought to the attention of a national newspaper that domestic customers had seemingly been over-charged for their gas. According to the Times, it is alleged that the provider charged more than the apparently agreed figure of 4,572 units per annum for gas over several months last year. Speaking to the newspaper, a spokeswoman from npower defended the supplier's actions. "We think this is counterbalanced by our price reductions, which took place at the same time," she explained. Earlier this month, npower announced it was offering customers a £20 discount for purchasing its products via its company website. According to the gas and electricity supplier, the discount, which is usually passed on to switching sites as commission, is initially being offered to consumers for a trial period.
