Nuclear 'a safe source of low-carbon energy'

Nuclear power has been described by the UK's business secretary as a "safe source of low-carbon energy".

John Hutton made the comment in a speech at a government-hosted conference in London, where he urged global investors to consider getting involved in new projects in Britain.

He went on to state that the energy source has a "critical role to play in our future energy mix".

"To meet our energy goals, we must do everything we can to ensure new nuclear power stations are available as soon as possible," he explained.

Mr Hutton added that the government hopes to "build and maintain the best market in the world for companies to do business in nuclear power".

Last week, energy regulator Ofgem published a consultation document on the availability of gas and electricity supplies for next winter.

The report stated that the UK's efforts to secure gas will depend on the price that providers are willing to pay to secure the energy.
