Electricity market 'can be tough for small businesses'

The UK electricity market can prove difficult for small businesses, according to an expert.

Patricia Ockenden, the press officer of energywatch, said that firms can struggle when problems arise with their energy suppliers, as providers do not need to publish their tariffs and contracts cover a fixed term.

However, she added that in some ways, commercial electricity users can benefit from factors that households do not get.

"Unlike domestic consumers, small businesses can negotiate individual contracts and tariffs so they should be proactive and shop around for more competitive deals," she explained.

She continued: "They should review their current contract, find out what windows of opportunity there are for them to leave their supplier and take action within notice periods."

energywatch was established in November 2000 to promote and represent the interests of all gas and electricity customers.

Later this year, the organisation is being merged with the National Consumer Council, meaning small firms will need to approach energy suppliers directly when they have complaints.
