Ofgem publishes fuel poverty programme

Ofgem has published a programme of measures for commercial electricity suppliers to help their household customers.

The regulatory body's Fuel Poverty Action Programme features a number of points which were discussed at a meeting between the organisation and representatives from the government and providers in April.

Measures in the initiative include asking suppliers to promote switching services to customers without internet access, as well as urging providers to keep consumer advice groups informed over help.

Sir John Mogg, the chairman of Ofgem, said: "Last month's Ofgem summit brought together the government, energy companies and those most actively involved in fighting the effects of fuel poverty.

He added that the programme features "a whole series of practical steps to pinpoint help and to tackle fuel poverty".

Ofgem recently announced plans to recruit a number of domestic energy customers to help it improve its focus on consumer concerns.

The Consumer First Panel will be established at the start of October, with members being drawn from across the UK.
