Energy customers 'tend to shop around for deals when winter arrives'

Consumers start to consider switching their electricity provider in winter as their minds turn to the cost of heating, according to SimplySwitch.com.

The comparison service's founder, Karen Darby, said that as a consequence this time of year can be very important for energy suppliers and may encourage them to offer new low-cost tariffs to their household and business electricity customers.

Commenting on Scottish and Southern Energy's (SSE) new green "better plan" tariff, Ms Darby added that research has shown that while many consumers do care about the environment, only 16 per cent would consider switching to a green deal.

She said: "Research by SimplySwitch.com shows that widespread 'green attitudes' aren't yet translating into action when it comes to choosing energy providers.

"Price remains the biggest motivator for switching energy suppliers, with 'customer service' in second place."

SSE's new energy tariff has been designed to encourage customers to lower their energy use by offering financial incentives.

The company is offering a reward of £15 for consumers who reduce their energy use by ten per cent and £25 to those who lower their usage by 20 per cent.
