Customers 'increasingly aware of energy savings'

Customers in the UK are becoming 'increasingly aware' of the savings they can make by switching energy suppliers, according to moneysupermarket.com.

The comparison service's utilities expert Scott Byron also claimed that customers who are still hesitant on switching energy supplier should shop around and discover whether they would benefit from changing their tariff.

Commenting on Ofgem's recent findings that 2.8 million household and business electricity customers have switched their provider in the past seven months, Mr Byron said the figures were "encouraging".

He added: "Some consumers remain hesitant about swapping provider, believing it is too complicated. I would advise these customers to take the plunge and shop around, as it is highly likely they will be paying too much for their energy."

Ofgem's recent research also found that 2.3 million gas customers in the UK had made the decision to change their energy supplier in an effort to gain cheaper deals on their energy use.

The regulatory body's chief executive Alistair Buchanan said the research proved that "the heat is on" for suppliers to improve their service in an effort to retain customers.
