Energy customers 'need to keep track of their energy use'

Gas and electricity customers need to be aware of their energy consumption over the past year if they are planning to switch their providers, according to moneysupermarket.com.

The comparison service's head of utilities Paul Schofield also stated that the company's latest research confirmed that the best energy tariffs can be found on the internet.

Mr Schofield's comments came after moneysupermarket.com found that many household gas and electricity customers in the UK are paying over the odds for their energy usage.

He explained: "It is important to know what your energy consumption over the past 12 months has been when you are looking to change your provider to save money. If you don't have bills going back that far, phone your energy provider and ask for details of your energy use."

The latest comments from the comparison service follow its claim that a "genuine price war" was occurring in the UK's electricity market, after Scottish and Southern Energy went head-to-head with British Gas last week in an effort to offer the cheapest online tariff available in the UK.
