energywatch recommends new report to consumers

energywatch has said a new report about the sources of energy suppliers' provisions will give customers more information about the tariffs available to them.

The UK watchdog's Fuel Mix Disclosure report outlines how much of the major energy companies' electricity is generated from renewable, nuclear, gas or coal-powered stations.

Discussing the data, energywatch's head of campaigns Jonathan Stearn said the report should highlight how household and business electricity consumers can choose a more environmentally-friendly tariff.

He added: "This data will give consumers more information about how suppliers source their own electricity. However, we know that those consumers who want to make a difference by purchasing green energy, need more precise information about individual tariffs."

Mr Stearn also called for further guidelines on greener energy to be released by regulatory body Ofgem.

The release of energywatch's new data has come after the body's confidence code manager Tim Whittle claimed comparison sites "do much more" than promoting switching electricity suppliers.

It was claimed that the websites also help to improve tariffs and customer service in the sector.
